She\u2019s tried all the tricks : she\u2019s gone for a walk, listened to her favourite music, and planned movie nights with her family. Yet nothing seems to be helping with the overwhelming stress she is feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No matter what she is doing, she continuously thinks to herself :<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do my friends really like me?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will I end up with a job that I like?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will I be able to handle my next semester and the heavy course load?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will I ever be able to stop worrying about everything and just be happy?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like most of us, Sarah knows that no certain answers to these questions exist. Yet to overcome the uncertainty, she finds herself answering each question by playing out the worst case scenario. This in turn, leads to emotional turmoil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00acbd;font-family: Literata, serif;font-size: 1.625rem;background-color: var(--ast-global-color-4)\">Our recommendations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When we focus on what we have no control over, we feel powerless, discouraged, angry and fearful. But it\u2019s hard to shift our focus when it\u2019s all everyone is talking about. So one strategy is to remember the old saying:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Focus on what you <\/span><b>can<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> change<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accept things you <\/span><b>can\u2019t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> change<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And have wisdom to know the difference<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;color: var(--ast-global-color-3);background-color: var(--ast-global-color-4)\">Remembering to distinguish between what we can and can\u2019t change can sometimes alleviate anxiety. What\u2019s the point of wasting precious mental and physical energy focusing on things we can\u2019t change?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;color: var(--ast-global-color-3);background-color: var(--ast-global-color-4)\">But what happens when we still can\u2019t stop thinking about things we can\u2019t control?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;color: var(--ast-global-color-3);background-color: var(--ast-global-color-4)\">Our next article will answer this specific question.
